Transportation
Car
Rentals
It
is best to make use of the extensive public transportation
systems while in New York, because the traffic is horrendous
and parking is extremely expensive and equally difficult
to find. Moreover medium sized rental cars cost almost $100
per day and to top it all Gas costs far more in NYC than
elsewhere in the US.
Mass
Transport
Although New York's subways are noisy, confusing to the
new traveler and sometimes extremely hot, the subway is
not really that difficult to navigate and it is statistically
safer than walking the streets in daylight, and most of
NYC Attraction are connected by public transport. Moreover
it's the fastest, and most reliable mode of transport in
NYC.
The
subway fare is a flat charge of $1.50 and may be paid with
tokens or with the Metro Card. The metro card is a pre-paid
card priced at $43 to $80. One can transfer between buses
and subways on the same card. Another excellent option is
the seven-day and 30 day Unlimited Ride Metro Cards priced
at $17 to $63. City buses operate 24 hours a day, and between
10pm to 5am the buses will stop anywhere on the route for
passengers to get off.
Route maps for buses are available at subway and train stations.
Many well-marked bus stops have a 'Guide-a-Ride' maps making
nearby landmarks. At any time one can call 718-330-1234
and get subway travel directions. Another number worth remembering
is 718-330-4847 this gives information on bus and subway
routes in 140 languages.
Another
NY local transport system is Ferries. That ferry up and
down the Hudson River, from Midtown to Yankee Stadium and
from Hoboken to the World Financial Center.
Cabs
Every one in the world has heard stories of the New York
Cabbie, but much of the infamy is undeserved. Tip of around
10% to 15% over the fare is normal and expected even demanded.
But it is not as if they are a law unto themselves, one
can always ask for a receipt, note the license number and
report the incident to the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission.
