History of Times Square

The New York Times building officially opened on New Year's Eve 1904 on 43rd street. They celebrated with a huge street party with fire works. The party proved to be so successful that the entire neighborhood, now called Times Square became more famous gathering area for New Yorkers than the previous preferred City hall Park. The crowds started becoming so large that Times Square started blending into New York's socio-economic within no time.
But by the mid 20's Times Square became a hot bed of sleaze and disrepute. The Depression of 1929 was a major set back, which resulted in sharp decline in theater attendances and performance halls started showing sexually explicit films. The 70s brought some respite with some really successful Broadway shows that kept Times Square alive but it was still considered an area of New York 'not suitable for the family'.
It was the 1980s that transformed Times Square from its sleazy seedy image to New York's star attraction and New Year hot spot. Disney entered Times Square, opened Disney Store and touched every aspect of it, from Disney's Broadway shows to cleaning up the streets, Times Square came alive with refreshing ideas for entertainment and fun.
Times Square is now America's gathering place to celebrate the arrival of a New Year with pageantry and celebrations.
Now Times Square is one of New York's must-see spot.
